Every day, there are people who start their fitness journey…
Not just the obsessives or addicts–and there most definitely are those people.
But there are also people who finally decide something has to change, and they WANT to start a consistent movement practice more than they’re afraid of NOT doing it. (That’s sort of key to the consistency part.)
It might not LOOK like the start of a fitness journey, because there’s not necessarily a huge, instantaneous transformation. There’s rarely a before & after moment. Nothing drastic happened from day 0 to day 1. (That’s a great indicator that this is truly a journey and not just a temporary detour.)
If the first step is actually 248 steps, and they all have to be taken in one day… woof. #NotSustainable
Even when almost all of the health and fitness information is activating our fears and not-good-enough-ness…
There’s always another choice.
Right now, there is a way to move your body that honors your authentic needs and capacity AND does it from a place of love, joy, and enoughness.
The challenge is that it can be difficult to discern your best next move through all the Toxic Fitness Culture messaging.
The more uncertain we are, the more our brains get confused trying to weigh our options:
- Am I doing this because I want to, or because I think I have to?
- Will this make me feel better, or worse?
- How do I move to feel good in my body without trying to change my body?
- Am I really the problem here, or am I being condescended to?
It’s not self-sabotage. It’s your brain’s way of making sure you don’t do anything drastic.
And asking yourself those questions–and then actually learning how to answer them for yourself–is drastic. Because that would require your brain to work A LOT HARDER. I’m sure you can relate that NO ONE–not even your brain–is trying to work harder (in this economy?!).
How does that make your brain work harder?
Because right now, we are told–and your brain believes–that Fitness ExpertiseⓇ is owned by someone else, someone outside of you, so all of that knowledge is elsewhere. Your brain finds it much easier to simply follow orders rather than be in charge of figuring all of this out and deciding for yourself what works best for you.
Basically, it is asking your brain to make from scratch, by hand, your own Fitness ExpertiseⓇ, when it has a perfectly serviceable automated assembly line already in action. Think: Grandma’s homemade biscuits vs. generic, off-brand canned biscuits.
So, if you’re ready to start your fitness journey:
- In a bite-sized, manageable, nervous system approved way
- Absolutely no before & after photos
- Without obsessing or making it your whole personality
- Just slow, steady, sustainable, long-term transformations
Then now is the perfect time to deviate from the generic fitness path and start forging YOUR OWN. It’s a way to cut through the Toxic Fitness Culture crap and settle your nervous system so you can accurately assess what you REALLY need, what you’re REALLY in control of, and HOW to give it to yourself.
What I know for sure:
- You do not have to stay stuck feeling frozen and unable to move your body because you feel lost and not good enough.
- You do not have to stay stuck feeling pulled to keep moving or else you fear never starting again.
- You do not need to bully or beat yourself up to find “motivation.”
- You do not have to sacrifice your self-esteem or mental health in the name of physical health.
- This can be the time when your fitness and health actually flourishes–without you sacrificing all of your time, money, willpower, or sanity.
